WHAT'S ON AT THE CABANA

Doors open 8pm unless otherwise stated.

September 2010

Thu 2: Uked @ The Cabana - Come and see the revolution! After the enormous success of the first Uked @ The Cabana night, organised by & for the Hawke's Bay Ukulele Underground, now a new date for the 3rd Ukulele Event. Now you know, so get your group together and start practising. Once again we will start with a Strum Along followed by an Open Mic. $5

Fri 3: Flip Grater - (Flip Grater) has a Hope Sandoval feel to her acousto-folk, but when she shades to something more angsty indie, she's got a little Cat Power in her" – Austin Cronicle

Gliding vocals dance over the top of guitars picked and strummed, and harmonies weave amongst the beauty of it all. Banjos, a bass, and a minimal drum kit complete the picture and the songs soar and fall, sometimes evoking sad feelings, sometimes stirring the heart with a gravelly punch. Where do you put Flip Grater? 100% New Zealand Music

Sat 4: SPRING BLOWOUT with Black Snapper and NZSM Jazz Collective - Rockabilly at its finest! Come join the party!

Black Snapper was formed in Napier, New Zealand, in late 2003 by Roy Brown and Marty Forrer, and rapidly became the hardest working band in Hawke's Bay.

One of only two or three rockabilly bands in New Zealand, we play the music of Bill Haley, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and the neo-rockabilly of the Stray Cats and Hillbilly Hellcats .

Black Snapper's standard lineup is Roy Brown on vocals, Marty Forrer on stand-up bass, Dennis Maunder on drums, and Tex Gretsch on guitar.

Hailing from the New Zealand School of Music in Wellington, the NZSM Jazz Collective have a tight and punchy sound with an appetite for grooving hard. This seven-piece band will bring a big sound to any venue, consisting of four in the rhythm section, two horns and a vocalist. You can expect to catch yourself singing and shaking with material covering Michael Jackson, James Brown, Jill Scott, St. Germain, Tower of Power and more. Members of the band gig regularly around Wellington and New Zealand with metal, soul and jazz groups – and Napier’s own Blvd. Nights. With the NZSM Jazz Collective you’re in for a night of funk, soul and hip hop grooves that will keep you on amping on the dance floor.

Won a Tui award for best Jazz Album at the 2010 NZ Music Awards under the direction of Dr. Rodger Fox. Some of us also play with the Rodger Fox Wellington Jazz Orchestra which is a hand-picked band, obviously also led by Rodger.

Thu 9: Open Mic Night - Here's your chance to play on The Cabana stage, come down and see the local talent on diplay. All welcome, School Bands, Singers, Dances, Poets and Painters - $5

Fri 10: Dead Heroes Collective w/friends Billys Gospel - The dead heroes Collective was formed late in the year 2000 orginally for the purpose of conversting Mick Lyons' song writing to a four track format. Paul Dalton provided lead guitar and bass lines, Mick Lyons played rythm guitar and sang, while a primative Casio keyboard was used for percussion.

The project was expanded to include several of Paul's songs and some co-written material.

When the recording was finished, it was decided it would be a pity to stop there, and a band was formed to perform the music. Mick moved from rythm guitar to bass, with the use of live drummers and drum machines as the situation required.

The group continued to evolve. The current line up now features Mick Lyons on rythm guitar and vocals, Jahn Hastings on drums and vocals, and Mike Shilton on Bass. Most of the music is original material by Mick Lyons and John Hastings, although we do some covers by realtively unknown groups such as "The Angels", "The Dead Milkman" "The Clash" and "Jesus and the Mary Chain", although it should be added that our renditions of those covers are so differnt as to be almost unrecognisable as such.

Our music has been described as "Swamp Grunge", but I guess it could best be decribed as original rock based music with a very quirky blend of hard rock, punk, and even Country based influences.

Sat 11: Civilian Down - Civilian are an outspoken Wellington group that mixes social consciousness with themes of punk, skate and all out rock. If you've been to a Civilian Down show in the last 18 months you will now exactly what they mean. They are to the point and waste no time in expressing there many views on politics, the propaganda labeled as 'news' and youth suicide.

Civilian Down (formally Miss Conduct) formed in mid 2004. Tony Breese and Tony Wilson began to write original material and collaborated with the rest of the band Stefan Dalley and Shaun Dent. Together they created a set of unique songs.

These early songs earned Civilian Down! a cult underground following and propelled them to the World Battle of the Bands stage where they placed runners up in the Wellington Finals.
